Cormyr: The Mystra Mystery

Day 5 part 3
The Plot Thickens

A search of Arthas’s chambers gave overwhelming evidence of evildoings – books on evil gods, a torture chamber, Fembrys’ journal, preserved human heads… Lucky for us, as Cormyr’s lawkeepers the Purple Dragons soon arrived and demanded an explanation for our actions. Sergeant Illimor seemed a bit put out that we’d caused such a disturbance in the courtyard with the whole decapitation ploy, but he couldn’t fault us on uncovering the worshippers of Shar and with a little diplomacy we secured leave to finish our investigations, overseen by a sun elf wizard named Korfel who’d arrived with Illimor. He is a friend of the mage who worked at the temple so I have my suspicions about him, thus far he seems fine but I will keep my eye on him.

With further exploration we found what might be a portal to the Plane of Shadow, a shrine covered in bones, and a secret underground dock with holding cells, guarded by an otyugh and a veteran spearfighter, whom I grossly underestimated. How ironic, that when finally I am matched with a worthy foe I still suffer from the dark priestesses enfeebling curse. He held his own, but cornered and outnumbered he found his spear was the wrong tool for the job and he fell to our blades. Oh yes, the mage distracted him with a cantrip from his wand too, but still I’m not sure whose side he’s on.

Besides a good fight we also found a pontoon, a female prisoner, and a map to a Sharran stronghold to the east. Or was it west? I found the map confusing. The prisoner told us how she and several other magically talented ‘initiates’ were being taken to this secret lair, but who knows why. Apparently those poor souls who fell afoul of Fembrys Starweaver but lacked any gift for magic became his playthings, as evidenced by their headless bodies in the torture chamber and the heads on his wall. Plenty of evidence for Tunnasta Drannic anyway, and possibly further employ and combat to come. This pleases me greatly.

Day 5 Continued
Scouring The False Temple

Day 5 continued.

Having secured our exit we stormed the depths of the temple. First we descended to a chamber strewn with rubble and guarded by an earth elemental and two guards. Somehow the guards hid themselves despite the encumbrance of banded plate armour and ambushed Artemis, our shifty scout from the south, but they fell quickly once we engaged them. The elemental of course was much tougher; he knocked out Artemis, and it took my White Raven technique along with Durak’s brute strength to bring it down.

After perusing a library and disarming an alarm we then came into a hall with a purple rimmed portal of pure darkness at its end. Here we were attacked by the leader of the temple Lady Arthas herself, further guards, and a trio of strange serpents with some illusion at work making them seem displaced from their true location. The humans again were no challenge, but Lady Arthas gave us considerable trouble – her spell of darkness made landing a blow upon the serpents even harder and it took my companions precious time slaying them. Meanwhile I darted through a gap in the melee to engage Arthas. Her skill at arms was lacking, but she did endure my Mountain Hammer technique and an Emerald Razor follow up in order to curse me with a dark spell that sapped my strength. With help from the others though we defeated her, shoving her through the chill portal and beating her within an inch of her life when she stepped out of it.

Every campaign gets an Adventure Log, a blog for your adventures!

While the wiki is great for organizing your campaign world, it’s not the best way to chronicle your adventures. For that purpose, you need a blog!

The Adventure Log will allow you to chronologically order the happenings of your campaign. It serves as the record of what has passed. After each gaming session, come to the Adventure Log and write up what happened. In time, it will grow into a great story!

Best of all, each Adventure Log post is also a wiki page! You can link back and forth with your wiki, characters, and so forth as you wish.

One final tip: Before you jump in and try to write up the entire history for your campaign, take a deep breath. Rather than spending days writing and getting exhausted, I would suggest writing a quick “Story So Far” with only a summary. Then, get back to gaming! Grow your Adventure Log over time, rather than all at once.

Days 1-5
The Story Begins

Day 1

My search for worthy challenges took an interesting turn today – Durak ad I came across an intriguing message in our inn, a notice asking all interested parties to meet with “the man in blue” at another inn of Wheloon and, take his commission of solving a riddle. After determining said man to be an elderly priest of mystra we decided to meet with him and learn more. When we found him he was with two other likely looking travellers, and he told us a tale of how he was recently attacked while checking out a newly built temple to Mystra which he found suspicious. His ‘riddle’ was to determine what was really going on there and bring back evidence to him, and the reward is to be 2,000 gold pieces. The four of us (Myself and Durak plus Artemis & Khamesh) accepted and agreed to work together, split the 500GP advance, and now we are heading to the temple to investigate.

Day 2

We found nothing untowards about the temple except that the priest leading the evening ceremony was eggageratedly friendly, so to learn more (only Artemis was happy to simply break in) we decided to go back today and undertake Mystra’s Sacred Trust – four days of initiation into the folds of Mystra’s faithful. Soon we leave our comfy inn room for some cold temple dormitory. I hope we learn something useful.

Day 5

What a bore! We’ve been here for four days now, chanting, sleeping, and washing ourselves far more than is good us I’m sure. We have seen very little of the temple, but we have met Starweaver Fembrys about whom the old priest told us. We are just about to undergo the final ritual of the course. Here’s hoping something interesting happens.


Well it seems the old man was right. In the final ritual Starweaver Fembrys dominated Durak and I with an enchanted orb! The Beduin Khamesh used a spell granted by Kossuth to free me from Fembrys’ control, and after restraining Durak we armed ourselves and stormed the nave, killing Fembrys and six of his guards. We took his orb and some black robes from another room as evidence, and released Durak who had his mind back to himself again. A quick search and we decided to secure our exit before delving deeper. Durak had the sick but clever idea of taking Fembrys’ head to intimidate the guards in the temple courtyard, and along with a paralysis spell from Khamesh we secured the surrender of Shanthar and some 7 guards. Great success!
